5-Amino-1MQ: The Newest Name in Every Fat-Loss Thread
If you have been anywhere near a fat-loss or biohacking thread lately, you have seen it: 5-Amino-1MQ, popping up like it is the next big thing. People stack it into conversations next to GLP-1s and metabolism peptides like it belongs there. So this month I read through the chatter to figure out what it is, what the research actually says, and what the threads keep getting wrong.

First things first, it is not a peptide
This is the number one thing threads botch, so let me clear it up. 5-Amino-1MQ is a small molecule, not a peptide. The full name is 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium, and it just gets grouped with peptides because it lives in the same research-compound corner of the internet.
What it actually does is inhibit an enzyme called NNMT, short for nicotinamide N-methyltransferase. In plain terms, NNMT is an enzyme that tends to be more active in fat tissue, and higher activity has been linked to slower metabolism and fat storage. The idea behind 5-Amino-1MQ is to turn that enzyme down and, in theory, let metabolism run a bit hotter.
That is the whole pitch in a sentence: block the fat-storage enzyme, boost the burn.
What the research actually shows
Here is where the threads get way ahead of reality. The exciting 5-Amino-1MQ research is preclinical. That means cells and mice, not humans.
In animal studies, inhibiting NNMT (including with 5-Amino-1MQ) has shown effects like reduced fat gain in mice on high-fat diets and some improvements in metabolic measures. Some studies also poked at muscle and aging-related pathways. Genuinely cool early science.
But I cannot say this loudly enough: there is very little human data. When a thread says "it melts fat," what they are really describing is a mouse result plus a lot of optimism. Mice are not people, and a promising enzyme target is not a proven fat-loss drug.
To be clear and boring for a second: 5-Amino-1MQ is a research compound and is not approved by the FDA for weight loss or anything else. Nobody is getting this from a doctor.
Why the threads are so hyped
The timing explains a lot. GLP-1 mania made everyone metabolism-obsessed, and 5-Amino-1MQ slots in as the "novel, mechanism-y" option people can feel smart researching. It also gets pitched as something that pairs with other compounds, so it rides along in stacking discussions even though the human evidence just is not there.
